HYMNS and SONGS S - Z
The T section on this page contains some cracking examples of Victorian music: There is a green hill" and "The old rugged cross". Both were composed before the days of amplification, and are very much written to be boomed across a church or crematorium with gusto and conviction!
The hymn "To be a pilgrim (He would would valiant be)" has surged in popularity since it was sung at the funeral of Baroness Thatcher, but the words are really about persevering in the face of adversity, a theme many will relate too.
On the song side, there are three superbly uplifting items to listen to. The Vera Lynn classic "We'll meet again" never fails to get a congregation humming along with a soloist, a wonderful moment at any funeral. Josh Groban's hit "You raise me up" rises from he depth of despair to hope, while every football fan will recognise the optimistic tone of "You'll never walk alone".
